I think a lot. So do most of you readers. I appreciate this very much. I know that you do not always think the same as I do, or as each other. This is why I love you. It gives me perspective. As most of you know, I love to think about politics and economics quite a bit. And prose poetry... but that is for another time, sorry. Now for the question....
what do you think should be done about the U.S. auto industry?
If I get enough responses... or any, I will post what I think on my next post.

Jason, the auto industry made billions of dollars in the late 90s early part of this century. The executives took home millions. Hundreds of millions were paid in dividends. In a capitalist society when you put out a good product that sells you are entitled to all the profits. However when your management is so greedy and has it's head in the sand regarding future trends, ie-the price of oil. You deserve shit. I feel sorry for the workers. That is a conudurum. The executives who got them in this mess and the shareholders whose voices were silent, let them eat cake! Mahalo, The King
i play ostrich alot in this day and age... however in the little bits of news i have picked up, my understanding is that if we let the US auto industry just deal with their poor business decisions we will continue to demoralize the population on the economic fringes.
If we are to suppliment them, it should ENTIRELY be conditionalized on DRASTIC fuel efficiency increases as RAPIDLY as possible. EVERY standard sized US car should be getting AT LEAST 35-45 mpg.
We should also include bonus funding for anyone that can produce a workable electric car solution that is sustainable for all walks of american and earthly life.
that or we should all move into newly developed urban centers with gardens/parks/public transit and WALKING
Let it rot. It is time for them to face reality and re-tool.
since i am not really a thinker, this is prolly a stupid idea.
i say fuck 'em.
if your product is no good, then your business fails.
if your business is poorly run, then it fails.
it's called the free market.
if there is a bailout, and i think there will be, it should put some pretty heavy conditions on automakers.
i agree w/timmeh...hard to believe, i know! huge management pay, very highly paid union workers, massive obligations for benefits/retirements, and many half-baked products that the market doesn't want...not a viable combo in my book, but what do i know, i'm broke.
like tim, i believe that the bailout will occur. hopefully they can put some serious restrictions on the 'loans'. stiff the ceo's, take away any golden parachutes & bonuses, mandated increased fuel efficiency, payback timelines, etc.
Obviously, we (USA) need the jobs and, therefore, the industry. So how about as part of the bailout we turn ownership over to the workers and nix the leadership that has run the companies into the ground. And of course, create a more fuel efficient, modern product.
according to the radio, 2 of the 3 cheese wienies that showed up to beg congress for bailout money flew in via their corporate jets...seperately. apparently 1st class on the commercial airliners was beneath 'em...or even jet-pooling in a single plane.
that's a prime example of why i say fuck 'em.
if they need the money that badly sell off the planes, cut out the perks, suck it up and sacrifice to turn your companies around!
I can't stop thinking (only every time I come to this blog - not all the time. lol) about why your blog sub-title doesn't say, "cogito ergo sum." If incognito means to disguise your identity, are you saying that since you're recognised, you therefor exist? Bizzare and interesting man, you are.
